Do you love New Zealand?
Do you love adventure stories?
Have you ever wondered what’s going through the mind of those nuts carrying tonnes of gear on a bike?

“In August 2015, Dunc Wilson became the first person to circumnavigate New Zealand on a bike. This 10,940 km journey followed one rule: cycle the closest available route to the coastline. The Big Loop candidly details Wilson’s 240-day cycling adventure, through native bush, ragged coastlines, farm stations and more – demonstrating how acquainting oneself with our country is best achieved under 100 km/h.”

Where to buy The Big Loop

The Big Loop in Whitcoulls

Kia ora whānau! It’s a nice inundation, being asked where one can buy your first adventure book, but it also makes me feel like I should jot down a few places where you can definitely acquire a copy.

Within New Zealand

Buy The Big Loop here

Start with your brilliant, local book shop. Mt Eden’s Time Out Bookstore (where I launched The Big Loop) is a really cosy shop and has copies. Matakana Village Books had copies when I popped in at the weekend. I’ve also had verified reports that Unity Books in Wellington has stock this week. Remember to ask if you don’t immediately see it. It’s been popping up in all manner of sections: New Zealand, Cycling, Sport, Travel, NZ Non-Fiction and even True Crime (I made that last one up).

The bigger players on the high street are also stocking it. That means you can get it in Whitcoulls and Paper Plus.

If you prefer to take your spring water from the purest source near the summit, then you can buy online direct from the publisher, Bateman and have it delivered. A super-wide panoramic painting of other online sellers exist, so feel free to shop around on the web.

Within the international sphere

If you’re buying outside NZ, you can get a copy and global delivery from Fishpond. They also offer you bundles with some, err, interesting other titles, by authors with the same name as me. Don’t be fooled: The Big Loop is my first book. Out of stock at time of writing, but Book Despository also deliver worldwide from their website.

Thanks – I hope you track down a copy and enjoy it. Let me know!

Everything begins with a moment… When my GoPro snapped this and tens of other pics at East Cape, I had no idea what one of them would become. I'd bought some ingredients at the country's easternmost shop, pedalled through dotted showers out to the lighthouse and cooked pancakes on my stove, beside the tall white structure. This was purely so I could bring you the 'East Crepe' gag. But that day also brought about the pic that would end up representing the entire adventure I was on! From Cape to cover. This week, I was lucky enough to be reminded of the great people in my life, as a heap of them turned up to launch my book with me. What a ride the ride was, then what a ride the launch was. Thank you. And thank you to @batemanbooks and @dogsattimeout for supporting 'The Big Loop' – get your copy now! Some 📷: @ctf_photo & @scott_geary #thebigloop #thisismyadventure #greatread

The Big Loop – pre-order now

Kia ora whānau – time for some very much needed The Big Loop book FAQs! Scroll down to have all your questions answered…

How much is it?
RRP is NZ$39.99. This includes the front and rear cover, plus one entire set of pages within, all bound together. Some retailers may charge slightly more, some less. If you find anyone attempting to charge $100 for it, please let me know, so I can go high-five them for trying!

Can I pre-order it?
You can! The best place is probably direct from Bateman, the publishers. Then, you can mute this Facebook page, forget all about it and get a nice surprise when it shows up in a few weeks! Go to this link

How do I buy it outside of New Zealand?
Fishpond do pre-orders & ship to ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD for no extra cost. Does anyone know someone on Pitcairn we can test this with? Little Diomede? Greenland? Apply below. Here’s the link

How do I get a signed copy?
You’re joking, aren’t you? I genuinely get asked this a lot & it still feels a bit odd, even if signing our work is one of the first things we learn in school. I’m hoping to be able to offer these through my website soon, I’ll keep you posted here. Or you can always buy one and badger me in the street if you happen to see me. This world is sometimes small.

Sorry, what is it?
The Big Loop is the story of a blacksmith, who makes a mistake while building a chain for an extremely important client and subsequently loses his job. Or is it about the longest bike ride New Zealand has ever known? The story of the first & fullest circumnavigation of Aotearoa by bicycle. How these islands were rounded and who and what I had to negotiate to get there. The adventure of a lifetime! Relive the tales from the comfort of your couch, stool, beach, pouf, hammock, loo, park bench, tent, library, bath or bed. *This is not a guide!*

Thank you!! Extremely excited for Friday here! Dx

The Big Loop – Biking Coastal New Zealand

The Big Loop, by Dunc Wilson – a book about a cycle ride right around the coast of New Zealand

When I set off to cycle the New Zealand coastline, I was hoping for two things: an unforgettable adventure & to raise some cash for St John New Zealand. I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d turn the people, stories & scenery I encountered into a book… Not a proper, real, published book!

Well, after much work, belief & a few setbacks, it’s happening. Last year, something incredible happened: David Bateman Publishing picked up my draft chapters and together we’re stoked to bring this story to you.

The final changes have been polished off… and The Big Loop will be available to buy from early October.

This is not a guide, it’s the candid account of what happened out there… the easy days, the struggles, what nearly broke me and, most importantly, the people who carried me round. It also has photos and some all-important maps.

I truly can’t wait to share it with you!
