Nice to walk with you, with no sore muscles or headache! Have only been to the Karamea Coast and caves area. We cycled in from Westport, wrong time of year for Heaphy cycling, and it was awesome. Although little traffic anytime they were rebuilding a bridge near Little Wanganui and it was only open a few times a day, or maybe every other hour, can't remember. Meant once past there no traffic at all until the next burst.

Thank you! The cycle from Westport to Karamea is magic. Traffic-minimal, only the one real climb (that I recall) and heaps of fascinating places along the way. Great you had a reduction in vehicles by the sounds too. I must get up to the caves someday!

We had a guide for the caves, Karamea local. I thought he was just driving us out to the Oparara bush/cave walks but he stayed & walked with us. A lovely guy whose local knowledge, yarns and humour really made the visit memorable. He started out working in forestry, from school, and was in 60s semi-retired guiding tourists in the same area. Seemed happy with the transition, both personally and environmentally.
